First, some work needed to be done to update the electrical system before the phones could be installed. That is complete now, so they are working on getting the phone system installed. The furnace also needed some repairs, which have been completed as well.
They have also submitted a request for a building permit for the fence and for a wheelchair ramp for the house. When they obtain those permits, they will start on those things.
Imagine what a spot they'd be in if we hadn't gone so far over our fundraising goal....
Georgia also sent me some new photos of the shelter with the furniture from the casino hotel in it. Nice furniture really makes a difference in the atmosphere inside the house, as you'll see.
So, check it out.

Jackie Brown Otter at the new shelter, her dream come true!

So folks, look at what the netroots community has done. We're about to have enabled an incredible group of women to open a wonderful new, and much needed, women's shelter on the Standing Rock Reservation.
Keep the donations coming. After it gets everything it needs to open, the shelter will need an ongoing supply of clothing and other items.
It looks like the only furniture that they really are missing right now is bunk beds. That's why we are still doing a ChipIn, so they can get whatever pieces of furniture or whatever bedding they might need to fully operate. Representative Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin and her husband generously donated a new washer and dryer, so that is one big-ticket item they don't have to worry about. I have been really impressed by her dedication to the shelter. She is one member of Congress who walks the walk.
Thank you all for being so generous. This project means a lot to a lot of women!

Fabulous! I finally got my big box sealed and addressed today. I have everything in there from soup to nuts, wait, from blankets to, well, sweaters, and hair bands, and stuff for kids and some kitchen stuff. I tried to use "Native eyes" to pick out things that would be at least somewhat culturally appropriate, doing my best. I told my little foster-to-adopt 4.5-year-old that we were shopping for blankets for little boys and girls whose daddies were hitting and so mean that their mommies had to leave with them. He picked out blankets for both. I put in some of those fleece blankets that you make yourself, thinking the moms would like to make them for their children. It will go off in the next day or two.
And oh, when it was time to carry the box to the car, he wanted to see if he could pick up this big box, and he did... then carried it out with my 16-year-old helper. I took pics, will try to get them to someone -- an effort from our hearts.
There will be more... from the heart.
OK, the box went out today. I hope everyone has fun opening it.
As time goes by, I hope to solicit more donations. I so want the women who come through the shelter to have the basics for their new homes. Items donated from the heart, hopefully some uplifting items.
Hi, Betsy --
Does the shelter still need a crib? I see that it's on the Target list, but you said they've got everything but bunkbeds, so I was wondering if a crib was still something they could use.
Hi Martian - I think they still do. I just forgot about it.
Hi, Betsy --
I think something is wrong with the Target lists. I'm getting a "This item can't be shipped to the address you entered." message. The shipping address I chose is the Georgia Little Shield one that is concealed for privacy. I've shipped before without problems -- any idea what's going on?
Oh, and I just saw an anonymous comment to one of the other blog posts saying that a crib had been sent. I don't know, it's still available on the list. Should I send something else entirely?
Sorry for all the confusion, Betsy.
