Ok people. Listen up! (18+ / 0-)and Daily Kos did it... the Kossaks came through with flying colors and I think we raised $15,000 total as of tonight...
I've just agreed to make up the difference between what you donate and what they need up to 15K until 10 PM EST. If you give 10K, I give 5K, etc.
Have pity on a poor Indexer and close the gap. As an added bonus, if you donate more than that before 10PM EST, I'll match it up to additional 5K.

Ahem, Ladies of PBWH, I hate to add to your workload but I do believe it is time to go curtain shopping!

This is starting to fly around LiveJournal, too. I don't know whether there'll be a significant response, but some of us are gonna help. Hang tight, folks, help is on the way (but you knew that).
Sometimes one's faith in humanity is justified.
Would knitted winter items (scarves, hats, mittens, etc.) be helpful right now? I see there's a request for sweatsuits and undergarments so I thought I'd ask!
Hi Angela,
Yes I think they would. There are 2 categories of women the shelter serves, battered women and sexually assaulted. The battered women will often also have children with them. When they have the leave the house in a hurry sometimes they don't have time to take everything they need. Add this to the extreme poverty on the reservation, and yes, definitely that would be appreciated.
I live in Northern CA and have a question about the needs of Indigenous women in other parts of the country. Are there shelters that serve this population in other states also? Is there any sort of network I could search for? I am greatly interested in the rights of Indigenous women and would love to know if there are efforts going on close to where I live. Any ideas on how I might go about finding this information? I know those of you working with this shelter must have your plates full, so to speak, so I'm only asking if the information is easy for you to relay. Thank you for your time and your work. I look forward to being able to contribute again in the (hopefully not too distant) future. Blessings on your work!
Hi Beth,
I would contact Amnesty International about that since they did the original report. Their press contact is Wende Gozan at 212/633-4247. I met her at the fundraiser last night. She was fantastic and would be able to steer you in the right direction. Also check the women's studies dept at UC Berkeley, a prof there might know as well.
If you want to find more information and resources for helping violence against Native women, go to Sacred Circle, Cangleska's website:

I'm actually planning to do some knitting too, and make some mittens out of fleece - I'm short of money but have a large stash of yarn and fleece! Knitting circle, anyone?
